Ok so we’ll never get to own any of the cars on this list or any future lists, unless we win the Lotto.
But with rumours that Fine Gael want to tax all Lotto winnings over the million mark at a rate of 45% chances are that even then we won’t be able to spring on one.
But that doesn’t matter. Perhaps you’ll see one at a Garda auction that they seized off of the Mafia or something and you’ll snap it up for the same price as a 1998 Fiesta.
Well we can dream.
Here’s the Top 10 Best Supercars of the last 10 Years….
10. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
Top speed: 248 mph (399 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) 2.8 seconds.
Weight: 2750 lbs (1247 kg).
Steve Saleen introduced the limited-production, hand-built S7 on August 19, 2000. Until 2004 it featured a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V8 engine with 550 horsepower. In 2005, the S7 was replaced by the S7 Twin Turbo, which featured the same engine with twin-turbo system packing 750 horsepower.
Base price for the S7 TT was around €430,000 and it was produced in 2005 and 2006 in very limited numbers.
Unlike Dave Donovan in Donegal who tried to sell his own car, the “Donster” car that was half a Renault 19 and half a Lada Riva. Top speed of about 35mph, down hill with the wind behind it.
Sales slumped when it failed all road tests, even Ireland’s own very thorough and in no way just a money making scam with no care for how a car actually performs on the road NCT.
Pity.
9. Mercedes Benz SLR 722
Top speed: 209 mph (337 km/h),
0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds.
Weight: 3900 lbs ( 1768 kg)
The SLR range was started in 2004 by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Five variants in the SLR family have been produced – two coupés, two roadster versions and finally the SLR Stirling Moss, which is the most exclusive and limited to just 75 examples.
Pricing for the regular SLR started at around €360,000 and the very limited Stirling Moss, went on sale last year was priced from €730,000.
Mercedes was the official sponsor of the German team in WW2.
That’s not true, it”s a filthy racist and historically inaccurate lie. Just in case it ever comes up in a pub quiz.
8. Aston Martin DBS
Top speed: 191 mph (307 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.2 seconds.
Weight: 3737 lbs (1695 kg).
Aston Martin launched the DBS in 2007, in the heart of this GT sports car is a hand built V12 engine that produces 501 horsepower. In addition to the coupe there is also a convertible version called Volante, which was introduced earlier last year. Base price for this beautiful Aston starts at €200,000, making it one of the cheapest cars in our list.
I went to school with a kid called Martin Aston. True story. Roll call would come around and the principal would call “Aston, Martin”. Sure at the time it wasn’t very interesting and probably isn’t very interesting now either. But you try coming up with something humourous about a sports car.
7. SSC Ultimate Aero
Top speed: 270 mph (434 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 2.8 seconds.
Weight: 2850 lbs (1293 kg).
Power comes from a 6.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that develops 1,287 horsepower. Stopping a car going over 250 mph is not easy, so 2009 year model has an AeroBrake to slow the vehicle down.
2008 model year had 1183 hp and it successfully held the “World’s Fastest Production Car” title last year. Now with extra 104 horsepower it is even harder for competitors to snatch the title. Despite being the “fastest production car” it does not impress as much as some of the other cars in our list.
I had an Ultimate Aero before. It was giant, at least 4 times as big as a standard bar. Dirty with a cup of tea.
Alright so it was a multipack and I felt like a right fat git after it, but still.
6. Lamborghini Reventon
Top speed: 211 mph (340 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.3 seconds.
Weight: 3671 lbs (1665 kg).
Based on the Murcielago, this stealth fighter inspired supercar is very rare. Lamborghini only produced 20 cars (plus one for the Lamborghini Museum marked as 0/20).
Reventon was priced at €1m.
Yeah, it’s all right I suppose, but it hasn’t even got front fog lights. Even my Almera has front fog lights and they work and everything
5. Koenigsegg CCXR
Top speed: 250+ mph (400+ km/h).
0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.1 seconds.
Weight: 2822 lbs (1280 kg).
Price starts at: €870,000
In 2009 Koenigsegg produced 25 units, it takes around 55 days to complete one car.
CCXR is the first green supercar. When run on regular gasoline, the 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged engine develops 806 horsepower, when run on E85 Biofuel it develops an impressive 1018 horsepower.
Run on Green diesel that cannot be bought in hidden away places in Louth it’ll get at least 4,000 horse power. Fact.
4. Pagani Zonda Cinque
Top speed:217 mph (350 km/h),
0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.4 seconds.
Weight: 2667 lbs (1210 kg).
Pagani introduced the first Zonda back in 1999 and so far over 115 different Zonda’s have been produced. Top of the line model is a Zonda Cinque, which is limited to just 10 cars (5 hard top models and 5 roadsters). Power comes from an AMG sourced V12 engine that produces 678 horsepower.
All cars were sold out very fast with prices starting at €1.3m
They continue to produce so many different types of Zonda that they just announced plans to release a Honda Zonda. Just because it’s a catchy name. It’ll have a 1 liter engine and be driven by old people, who can’t park in supermarket carparks properly.
It’ll still develop about 8 million BHP though. Take that gran.
3. Porsche Carrera GT
Top speed: 205+ mph (330 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.9 seconds.
Weight: 2000 lbs (1380 kg).
Between 2004–2006 1,270 cars were produced. Base price was €320,000. Porsche’s performance numbers have always been very modest, road tests in reality indicate that it can accelerate form 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
Rumour is that Porsche is working on a successor to the CGT, which should arrive any year now.
I wish that they company would announce exactly how to pronounce it. Because I say “Porsh” and there are some people that say “Porsh-ah”. People who use the latter are wrong. I only want to hear the word “Porsh-ah” if it’s in the sentence “She’s left Ellen and is waiting for you at home to be reminded what she’s been missing”.
2. Ferrari Enzo
Top speed: 219 mph (350 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.3 seconds.
Weight: 3010 lbs (1365 kg)
Named after the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. It is one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production cars. Ferrari built 400 examples between 2002–2004, initial production run of 349 cars was sold before the production began to existing Ferrari owners.
Base price for the Enzo was €490,000, and today if they come to the market trade above €1m. Successor to the Enzo will arrive next year.
Another car named after a company’s founder was the DeLorean and while it never sold as many as Ferrari do, it was able to travel through time.
It did give you Parkinson’s though
1. Bugatti Veyron
Top speed: 253 mph (407 km/h),
0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 2.5 seconds.
Weight: 4486 lbs (2034 kg)
Base price: €1,100,000 (£899,000/$1,550,000).
Veyron is the most taled supercar of this decade and for a reason. Sales started in 2005 and over 300 units have been sold so far. Reportedly every car is sold with a great loss, despite its very high cost. Total production is 300 units plus limited editions.
Jeremy Clarkson declared the Veyron “the greatest piece of engineering ever. No, I’m sorry, this is the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we will ever see in our lifetime.”
Ok so you probably knew this was going to be on the list the second you read the title, but seriously is there any other car worthy of the top spot?
