Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 12:34:00
LONDON: The provisional date for the gang-rape trial of an 18-year-old Malaysian student here has been set for May 9.
The A-level student of Bellerbys College in Greenwich had been allegedly drugged, raped and filmed by four Russian men, including a former intelligence officer.
Prosecution officer Lynne Townley said the men were charged with raping the Malaysian girl during a party at the halls of residence on Jan 21.
At the preliminary hearing yesterday), the accused — Oleg Vladimirvich Ivanov, 20, Gregory Andreev Melnikov, 23, Norayr Davtyan, 23, and Armen Simonyan, 19, were produced before Judge M. Carroll at Woolwich Crown Court in London.
The young victim was not in court during the hearing.
A family friend of one of the defendants told The Malay Mail two of the men were from Russia and the other two are from Armenia.
The four men, who are English language students at the same college where the girl is studying, spoke only to confirm their names during the 20-minute hearing. They listened to the court proceedings with the assistance of three Russian interpreters.
The four have been in remand since they were charged with the offence which was recorded on the suspects’ mobile phones. There was no application for bail yesterday but the court will sit again on March 24 to hear the defendants’ pleas.
The four men are currently retained at Feltham prison, a male juvenile prison in Southwest London.
